"The door to heaven is narrow. Work hard to get in..."
“Make every effort…because many…will try to enter and will not be able to.” Nothing should stand in your way of seeking to enter through the door Jesus requires. There is no cost too great, no effort to difficult. And somehow, according to Jesus, it does require effort. The nature of that effort…what is it? The sola fide tribe will downplay it, point us to Ephesians 2, but stop with verse 9. How are we to understand our own efforts to enter as Jesus commanded? How are we to understand that Ephesians 2 is but one passage and that many more talk like this one of work and effort and obedience (Eph 4:1; Phil 2:12-13; 3:16 Heb 4:1)? How are we to understand that “the righteous shall live by faith,” could also mean, “The righteous shall live by faithfulness” (Hab 2:4; cf. Rom 2:17)? “Make every effort” to understand what Jesus is saying, what Paul has said, and what the New Testament teaches; it is not too costly. “Watch your life and your doctrine closely. For by it you will save both yourself and your hearers" (1 Tim 4:16). "Question everything. Keep the good" (1 Thess 5:21).
